Trevor Project’s Kevin Wong shares what’s in his corner of the internet

Here at Mozilla, we’re the first to admit that the web isn’t perfect, but we’re also quick to point out that the web is pretty darn magical. The internet opens doors and opportunities, allows people to connect with others and lets everyone find where they belong – their corners of the internet. We all have an internet story worth sharing. In My Corner of the Internet we talk to people about the online spaces they can’t get enough of what we should save pocket to read later and which pages and forums they have shaped.

As Pride celebrations continue throughout June, this month we’re featuring LGBTQ+ leaders in our My corner of the internet Series. First up is Kevin Wong, the vice president of communications at Trevor Project, where we chat with him about what he consumes online, his love for his cat Izzie, and the intersectionality of LGBTQ and AAPI communities.

What’s your favorite corner of the internet?

I’ve been looking at more Instagram accounts highlighting AAPI news and achievements such as: gold house, Netflix Gold, NextShark, NBC Asian America and more. While media exposure of AAPI has increased significantly, it’s still not mainstream, so I like to follow these accounts so I can always see what’s happening.

What’s one internet deep dive you can’t wait to jump back into?

I love weird facts about animals or science, so every time someone starts a digestible Twitter thread, I feel like I’m in heaven.

What’s the one tab in your browser that you always regret closing?

Definitely my Gmail tab, hands down.

Who is an LGBTQ+ person with a strong online presence who is a role model for you?

Whew, obviously Jay Jurden. He’s a bi-comedian and makes all his followers laugh at some pretty challenging times. I’ve also seen him perform stand-up in real life and the hits just keep coming!

What is it that you just can’t stop talking about online?

In the last five years I have NOT shut up about our cat, Izzie. She is a Russian Blue and she is extremely affectionate! She even loves strangers.

What was the first online community you got involved with?

I remember as a kid I was dying to meet more LGBTQ people, so I looked for those connections online. Then, when I started working in communications, I interacted with PR professionals online as well as with other AAPI people on Twitter.

What articles and videos are in your Pocket just waiting to be read/watched?

I’ve found how comforting it is to watch shows and movies I’ve already seen like The Witcher, Fullmetal Alchemist, and the John Wick trilogy. Plus, I can display a second screen or nod off if I want!

If you could create your own corner of the internet, what would it look like?

It would be amazing to have a corner of the internet that constantly affirms you, recognizes your strengths and boosts your confidence. So many of my friends tell me they can’t get enough of this validation, and I think there’s always room for more of it in everyone’s life. But if I could turn my own corner of the internet into a physical space, it would be equal parts snooze and dance party!
