US sanctions Iran’s morality police after woman’s death

The US government has imposed sanctions on Iran’s vice squad after the killing of a woman accused of wearing her Islamic head covering too loosely. The sanctions on Thursday were imposed after at least nine protesters were killed in clashes with Iranian security forces since violence erupted over the weekend. The Finance Ministry says Iranian officials oversee organizations that use violence to repress peaceful protesters, political dissidents and women’s rights activists. Morality police say 22-year-old Mahsa Amini flouted Iran’s conservative dress code and died of a heart attack in custody. Continue reading

At least 2 dead after magnitude 6.8 quake hits western Mexico days after deadly quake

A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Mexico, killing at least two, damaging buildings and triggering landslides. The quake struck just after 1 a.m. early Thursday, just three days after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck western and central Mexico. This quake was also blamed for two deaths. Monday’s stronger quake was the third major earthquake on September 19 – 1985, 2017 and now 2022. Continue reading
